Kevin Howell Named NC State University’s First Black Chancellor
In a historic appointment, Kevin Howell has been named the 15th chancellor of North Carolina State University, becoming the first Black person to hold the position. Nearly four decades after making history as the university’s first Black student body president in 1987, Howell is set to lead his alma mater into a new era of growth and innovation. The University of North Carolina System Board of Governors unanimously approved his selection, following a nomination by system President Peter Hans.
Howell will officially assume his new role on May 5, succeeding Randy Woodson, who is retiring after 15 years as chancellor. His appointment marks a unique departure from traditional academic leadership, as he is not a career academic. However, his extensive experience in higher education administration and government affairs positions him as a strategic leader for NC State’s future.
A Legacy of Leadership and Service
A native of Shelby, North Carolina, Howell earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from NC State before obtaining a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career spans both public service and university leadership, having worked under Governors Jim Hunt and Mike Easley as a legislative liaison. He has held multiple roles within the NC State administration, including assistant to the chancellor for external affairs, interim vice chancellor for advancement, and executive director of the alumni association.
Howell left NC State in 2016 to serve as senior vice president of external affairs for the UNC System, where he played a key role in government relations and economic engagement. He returned to NC State in 2018 as vice chancellor for external affairs, partnerships, and economic development, a position he held until 2023. Under his leadership, NC State received national recognition for economic engagement, reinforcing the university’s role as a driver of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Navigating Challenges in Higher Education
Howell takes on the chancellorship at a pivotal time for higher education, with universities across the country facing financial pressures and policy shifts. NC State recently enacted a hiring pause due to financial challenges, highlighting the need for strategic leadership in navigating budget constraints and institutional priorities.
Peter Hans emphasized Howell’s ability to maintain bipartisan support for public education and drive NC State’s mission forward. “Kevin Howell is a born leader with a long record of service to North Carolina, the UNC System, and NC State University. His deep relationships across the state have helped drive investment and growth. I am confident that he will strengthen NC State’s role as a frontier research university,” Hans stated.
A Vision for the Future
Howell expressed gratitude and excitement about his new role, acknowledging the profound impact NC State has had on his life. “This university shaped my life in profound and generous ways, and I am honored for the chance to lead my alma mater,” Howell said. “There are exciting days ahead for the Pack, and I’m ready to make a difference.”
His leadership is expected to focus on strengthening NC State’s economic partnerships, enhancing research initiatives, and fostering inclusivity within the university community. Howell’s extensive experience in policy, governance, and institutional development positions him as a transformative leader ready to guide NC State into its next chapter.
As the first graduate to lead the university since 1998, Howell’s appointment signifies a full-circle moment for NC State, reinforcing the university’s commitment to leadership, innovation, and diversity. His tenure begins with high expectations, but his proven track record of service and dedication suggests he is well-prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
