From Wrestling Mat to Boxing Ring: Deangelo 'Muscle' Evans Shares His Journey in Exclusive Interview
In an exclusive sit-down for Kashvision's On The Block Interviews Series, upcoming professional boxer Deangelo Evans, known in the ring as "Muscle," shared his compelling journey from a childhood athlete to a rising star in boxing. Evans delved into his past, revealing the pivotal moments that shaped his career and personal life.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Evans spent his formative years moving across the state. His early life was marked by a deep involvement in sports, including wrestling, basketball, track, and football. A notable achievement from his high school days includes holding the third fastest 4x200 meter relay time at Ben L. Smith High School alongside teammates Jeda Williamson, Nicholas Witherspoon, and Wesley Witherspoon-Williams.
Despite his varied athletic interests, wrestling stood out as Evans' true passion. “I like the one-on-one aspect of it,” Evans explained. “If I lose, it’s because I didn’t work hard enough. I can't blame anybody else.” This dedication to wrestling earned him a spot at Averett University in Danville, Virginia, where he joined the newly established wrestling program.
While at Averett, Evans stumbled upon Luck’s Gym, a renowned boxing gym in the area, as a means to stay in shape. He recounted his first visit to the gym with a mix of humor and humility. After a brief and intense sparring session, he quickly realized the challenges of boxing. “I threw all I had for 30 seconds, and the guy hit me one time. I immediately took a knee, began praying, and started rethinking my decision,” Evans shared. However, his determination not to let anything deter him kept him committed to the sport.
Evans highlighted the various hardships that come with being a professional boxer, including the demanding business side, the intense workload, and prolonged time away from family. Now signed with Wise Owl Boxing, Evans relies on his team to manage the logistical aspects of his career, allowing him to focus solely on training and competition. Despite the sacrifices, including missing family events and personal milestones, Evans remains dedicated. He strives to bring his children along for travels when possible and spends quality time with them whenever he can.
Currently boasting an impressive record of 11-0 with 10 knockouts, Evans is gearing up for his next bout on August 24 in Morrisville, NC. To catch the full interview with Deangelo Evans and hear more about his inspiring journey, visit our On The Block Interviews page.
